Unfix verifies whether bug fixes in C, C++ and firmware really remove the bug by reproducing it, applying the fix, and removing it again to confirm the bug

What it is

unfix.dev, as visitors see it

Unfix is an independent verifier for bug fixes in C, C++ and firmware. It does not write code—instead, it reproduces the bug on the base version, applies the fix and re-runs tests with sanitizers, checks that other tests still pass, then removes the fix and confirms the bug comes back. The tool also scans the diff for masking such as disabled sanitizers, weakened assertions or added delays. Each verification results in one deterministic verdict: VERIFIED (the bug is fixed with evidence), REJECTED (not fixed or masked), or NOT VERIFIABLE (evidence cannot decide). Unfix runs inside AI coding agents like Claude Code and Codex, as a GitHub pull request check, in the terminal, and on real hardware. It is built for closed networks with no cloud dependency and no language model in the verdict—deterministic rules and builds run entirely on your machines.

What it is built with

  • Reproduces bugs deterministically on base version before applying fix
  • Verifies fix removal confirms bug returns
  • Scans diffs for masking patterns like disabled sanitizers and weakened tests
  • Runs on real hardware via STM32 NUCLEO boards and ST-Link
  • Integrates with AI coding agents as MCP tool
  • Posts verdicts as GitHub pull request comments
  • Provides per-test verdicts: FIXED, BROKEN, FLAKY ON THE BENCH, FLAKY WORSE
  • Runs entirely on your machines with no cloud dependency
  • Generates reports for change records and regulatory compliance
  • Runs builds and tests in Linux container on your machine

Questions from the bench

What is Unfix?
Unfix is an independent verifier for bug fixes in C, C++ and firmware that does not write code. It checks whether a fix—written by a developer or an AI coding agent—really removes the bug, and returns VERIFIED, REJECTED or NOT VERIFIABLE.
How does Unfix verify a fix?
It reproduces the bug on the base version ensuring it fails every run, applies the fix and re-runs tests with sanitizers, checks that other tests still pass, then removes the fix and confirms the bug comes back. It also scans the diff for masking such as disabled sanitizers, weakened or deleted tests, and added delays.
Does Unfix work with firmware and real boards?
Yes. Unfix can build firmware, flash real boards (STM32 NUCLEO via ST-Link) and run tests on the hardware. It provides per-test verdicts on your rig: FIXED, BROKEN, FLAKY ON THE BENCH, and FLAKY WORSE. For a single bug fix, /fix gives one verdict: VERIFIED, REJECTED or NOT VERIFIABLE.
Where does Unfix run?
Unfix runs as an MCP tool inside AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex, as a GitHub pull request check, in the terminal, and on your hardware rig. Built for closed networks with no cloud and no LLM—it runs entirely on your machines with builds and tests running offline after one-time setup.
What was the result of the public benchmark?
Unfix tested 10 AI-generated C/C++ patches against real bugs from open-source projects (fmt, spdlog, zlib-ng, cpp-peglib) and judged each against the maintainers' own hidden reference tests. Unfix verified 4 and rejected 6.
