AI tools designed to help people think, create, and build with software under user control, where agents are open, modifiable, and loyal to the individual.
What it is
Imbue builds AI products designed to put software under user control. Rather than creating closed platforms that lock users into company ecosystems, Imbue is building an open agent ecosystem where users can understand, modify, and verify their agents so they work only in the user's interest.
The company was founded in 2021 with the mission to make technology serve humans. They believe that today's software and agents don't work for their users—they work for the company that built them. Imbue's alternative vision centers on individual human experience and collective humanity remaining in control of powerful AI systems.
Imbue offers multiple products including Studio (a personal AI operating system), Bouncer (a tool to filter and improve X feeds), Cloud in a Bottle (self-hosted software), and Vet (an open-source code review tool). The team operates from their San Francisco office and is focused on building what they call "honest software"—tools that are loyal to users, not platforms.
What it is built with
- Code review with confidence scoring and deduplication
- GitHub Actions integration for PR reviews
- Agent conversation history analysis

Questions from the bench
- How is Vet different from other code review tools?
- Vet reads your agent's conversation history alongside the diff to catch when the agent's actions don't match your request. It runs before you push, works with local models, has no telemetry, and is tuned for precision over recall.
- Does Vet send my code anywhere?
- No. Vet has zero telemetry and no account. Requests go directly from your machine to your chosen inference provider, and with a local model, your code never leaves your machine.
- What models can I use with Vet?
- You can use Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including local models via Ollama or compatible runtimes. Use your own API key, or pass --agentic to use an existing Anthropic or OpenAI subscription.
- What is Vet's license?
- Vet is licensed under AGPL-3.0. It is free for any use, commercial included. If you modify Vet and offer it as a hosted service, you share your changes back.
