What it is

chanto.sh, as visitors see it

Chanto is an open-source coding agent for your terminal built in Rust. It starts instantly with only 13ms startup time and stays light with just 17MB peak memory usage. The agent works with any model including local models through Ollama, llama.cpp or vLLM, and hosted APIs from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini and DeepSeek.

Chanto reads existing Claude Code and Codex settings as they are, including MCP servers, skills and instruction files. It features background runs on separate branches, verification that runs project checks before completing tasks, an undo function to revert changes, and a sandbox for secure command execution with spend limits.

The tool supports macOS, Linux and Windows platforms. It is open source under Apache-2.0 license with no account required, paying only to the model provider or nothing with a local model.

Questions from the bench

What does "Chanto" mean?
Chanto is Japanese for "properly", as in a job done properly. The aim is an agent that does the job properly: fast, light on your machine, and dependable through long sessions.
Is Chanto free?
Yes. Chanto is open source under Apache License 2.0 and needs no account. You pay only your model provider, or nothing if you run a local model.
Which models does it work with?
Chanto works with local models through Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM or any OpenAI-compatible server, hosted APIs such as Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Gemini and DeepSeek, ChatGPT plans, and company accounts with Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or Azure.
Does my code leave my machine?
Only to the model provider you pick. With a local model, nothing about your project leaves the machine. Chanto makes two small requests to chanto.sh at most once a day for release checks and price lists, neither sending prompts, keys or project data.
Which platforms does it run on?
Chanto runs on macOS, Linux and Windows on arm64 and x86_64 architectures (Windows on x64).
