A GitHub Action that detects when pull requests pass their tests by deleting, skipping or changing them, and holds the pull request for human review.

What it is

honest-ci.dev, as visitors see it

honest-ci is a GitHub Action that identifies pull requests where tests pass because they were modified rather than the code being fixed. It detects five types of test-integrity issues: deleted tests, added skip or focus markers, fewer assertions, changed expected values, and lowered coverage thresholds. The tool reads pull request diffs and either holds the pull request for human review or blocks it based on configurable rules.

The tool runs deterministically on your CI system without requiring Docker, test setup, or external models. It creates one comment per pull request and a commit status, allowing teams to require human approval before merging. Optional AI models can explain findings but never change verdicts.

honest-ci is free for public repositories and for private repositories where only the owner opens pull requests. Teams using private repositories need a license key after a 14-day trial. The source code is available under the Fair Core License and will become Apache-2.0 two years after each release.

What it is built with

  • Detects lowered or removed coverage thresholds
  • Supports Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java and Go
  • Runs deterministically without Docker or model setup
  • Optional AI models explain findings without changing verdicts
  • Detects unresolved review threads on pull requests

Questions from the bench

What are the five test-integrity rules honest-ci checks?
honest-ci checks five rules: deleted tests (I-01), skip or focus markers (I-02), fewer assertions (I-03), changed expected values (I-04), and lowered coverage thresholds (I-05). The first four hold pull requests for human review, while the fifth is blocked by default.
Who counts as a person for subscription purposes?
Every human who opened a pull request or submitted a review on one in the covered private or internal repositories in the last 90 days counts as a person, including outside collaborators. GitHub Apps and bot accounts do not count, but human accounts opening pull requests under their own name do, even if an AI tool submitted the request.
What happens if a license key expires?
A license key keeps working for 30 days after its end date, preventing late renewals from stopping CI. Trial keys have no grace period and expire on their end date. Without a working key, honest-ci reports an error instead of showing a false pass.
