VA Disability Calculator is an independent, free tool that helps veterans and their families understand how the VA combines disability ratings and what published compensation rates mean. The calculator applies the VA's official combining rules from 38 CFR 4.25 and 4.26, including the bilateral factor for ratings on multiple limbs, and looks up monthly pay amounts from VA.gov's published rate tables. Users enter their service-connected ratings, specify which affect arms or legs, and indicate any dependents to see their estimated combined rating and monthly compensation. Everything runs in the browser with no data sent to external servers. The tool also provides related calculators for back pay, pay dates, TDIU checks, SMC rates, and condition-specific rating guides.

What it is built with

  • Combine disability ratings using VA's official 38 CFR 4.25 and 4.26 rules
  • Apply bilateral factor automatically for ratings on both arms or legs
  • Access related tools for back pay, pay dates, TDIU checks, and SMC rates
  • View 2026 VA disability pay chart with rates effective December 1, 2025
  • Check 2027 estimated rates with 3.6% COLA adjustment
  • All calculations run locally in browser with no data transmission

Questions from the bench

What is the bilateral factor?
If a veteran has compensable ratings on both arms or both legs, the VA combines those ratings first, then adds 10% of that combined value before combining it with other ratings. This is specified in 38 CFR 4.26.
How much is 100% VA disability per month in 2026?
For a veteran with no dependents, the 100% rate effective December 1, 2025 is $3,938.58 per month. Dependents and SMC can increase this amount.
Do dependents increase pay at 10% or 20%?
No. The VA adds dependent amounts only when the combined rating is 30% or higher.
Is this calculator official?
No. The site is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Results are estimates only, and a veteran's VA decision letter is the official record of their rating and payment.
How does the VA combine disability ratings?
VA does not add ratings together. It starts with your highest rating and applies each next rating to the part of you that is still “efficient,” using the Combined Ratings Table in 38 CFR 4.25. The final combined value is then rounded to the nearest 10%, with values ending in 5 rounded up. See how VA math works.
