What it is

Timespanly is a set of free time and date calculators that answer everyday time and date questions. The main Time Duration Calculator finds the elapsed time between two times, or two dates and times, in hours and minutes. It handles shifts that run past midnight, adds up several spans, and can count daylight saving changes. The site also includes calculators for days from today, adding and subtracting time, hours worked in shifts with breaks, and days between dates. Each tool shows the answer first, then explains how it arrived at the result with worked examples and common mistakes.

What it is built with

  • Calculate elapsed time between two times or dates
  • Handle shifts that cross midnight
  • Support for multiple time formats: h:mm:ss, decimal hours, and total minutes
  • Account for daylight saving time with timezone selection
  • Add up to 20 time spans together
  • Run calculations in browser with no data storage
  • Pre-calculated common work shifts for reference
  • Calculate hours worked with unpaid break deductions

Questions from the bench

How many hours is 9 to 5?
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch, the time worked is 7.5 hours.
How do I calculate the time between two times?
Convert both times to minutes after midnight and subtract the start from the end. If the result is negative, add 1,440 minutes (24 hours). Divide by 60 for hours, and the remainder is the minutes.
Does it handle daylight saving time?
Only when you turn on dates and choose a time zone. Without a time zone it uses clock time, which is what most people mean when they say a shift runs from 9 to 5.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 20 minutes is 0.33 hours, rounded to two places.
Is elapsed time the same as duration?
Yes. Both mean the time that passes between a start and an end, which is what this calculator shows.
