A minimal, free Mac browser that blocks ads and trackers, includes reading mode, and a focus mode that hides everything but the page.
What it is

Nook is a minimal browser for macOS designed for quiet, distraction-free browsing. It blocks ads and trackers before they download by checking requests against Ghostery's filter lists. The browser includes a reading mode that displays articles as a single readable column without sidebars or sign-up prompts, and a focus mode that hides the tabs and toolbar to maximize screen space for the page content.
The interface is intentionally simple: a row of tabs, an address bar, and four buttons comprise the entire window. Bookmarks, history, and downloads are accessed through a single menu button. Nook is built on Chromium, runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13 or later, and is completely free with no account required.
The browser prioritizes privacy by default, deleting all cookies, cache, and site data when quitting, with no telemetry or crash reporting. Every page runs in Chromium's sandbox for security, and the Mac download is signed and notarized by Apple.

Questions from the bench
- Why was Nook built?
- Nook was built because browsing had stopped feeling quiet. The creator built it to address the problem of cluttered web pages filled with cookie banners, auto-playing videos, sidebars, sign-in prompts, and other distracting elements that obscure the actual content.
- How does ad and tracker blocking work?
- Nook checks every request a page makes against Ghostery's filter lists and stops the ones that belong to ads and trackers before they leave your Mac. Blocked ads never download, making pages lighter and load faster.
- What happens to my data when I quit Nook?
- All cookies, cache, and site data are deleted every time Nook quits. There is no account, no sync, no telemetry, and no crash reporting.
- Can I use Nook to watch streaming services like Netflix?
- Netflix and other DRM-protected streaming services will not play in Nook because it is built on Chromium.
- What are the system requirements for Nook?
- Nook runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13 or later.
