Questions from the bench
- Who makes Captions Gen?
- Kris, a video editor, created Captions Gen as a free Premiere Pro plugin for other editors to add animated captions.
- Does my footage leave my computer?
- No. Captions Gen transcribes your audio locally using Whisper. The speech model downloads on first run and license checks use the internet, but your footage is not uploaded.
- Can I edit captions after they're placed?
- Yes. Each caption is an editable Motion Graphics clip. You can adjust text, appearance, and timing in Premiere's Properties panel, or use Apply style to placed captions to restyle them without re-transcribing.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. Captions Gen is free with no time limit, no watermark, and no subscription. It includes local transcription, word-by-word karaoke captions, built-in presets, and live preview.
- What languages does it support?
- Whisper supports about 100 languages with auto-detect. English gives the tightest word timing, and you can pin a language in Settings.
