Automated backups of Supabase databases and Storage files to your own S3, R2, or B2 bucket, with scheduled restore drills that verify recovery works.
What it is

BackupDrill provides disaster recovery for Supabase projects by backing up both your database and Storage files to your own cloud bucket (S3, R2, B2, or Wasabi). Unlike Supabase's built-in backups, BackupDrill includes Storage files alongside database snapshots and runs automated restore drills on a schedule to verify that recovery actually works.
The service streams backup bytes directly to your bucket without storing them on BackupDrill's servers. Each restore drill provisions a temporary isolated sandbox, restores the latest snapshot, verifies checksums and table counts, and destroys the sandbox after confirmation. You receive a graded report showing the measured restore time.
BackupDrill offers both a hosted service and an open-source MIT-licensed CLI that runs the same backup engine. The hosted service handles scheduling, drills, and email alerts, while the DIY CLI covers one-off backups. Connection requires only a read-only backup role in your database—no service role key or dashboard access needed.

Questions from the bench
- Where do my backups actually live?
- Backups are stored in your own S3, R2, B2, or Wasabi bucket where you hold the keys. During backup, data streams through BackupDrill's workers and is never written to their disks. Restore drills download snapshots into an isolated temporary sandbox that is destroyed after verification. All snapshots remain yours if you cancel.
- How is BackupDrill different from Supabase PITR?
- Supabase PITR costs $100/month per project and does not cover Storage files. BackupDrill provides verified daily snapshots of both database and Storage files together, starting at $19/month. For sub-24-hour recovery points, you can run both services as they solve different problems.
- What happens in a restore drill?
- BackupDrill downloads your latest snapshot into an isolated temporary sandbox, provisions a temporary Postgres, and restores into it. The drill verifies archive SHA256, pg_restore completion, table count matches, that populated tables restored non-empty, and sampled SHA256 checks on Storage files when included. Wall-clock restore time is measured, then the sandbox and instance are destroyed and the report is emailed to you.
- How do I get started?
- Sign up at app.backupdrill.com with no credit card. Click Connect Supabase and pick your project, then point BackupDrill at your own S3, R2, or B2 bucket. Your first backup runs automatically within minutes of connecting, followed by a free restore drill.
