What is Ambient New Tab?

Ambient New Tab is a free browser extension for Chrome that replaces the blank New Tab page with a living animated scene. The scenes are generated live on your graphics card, follow your mouse, and can move to music playing in another tab. It also shows a clock, the date and a search box that uses your default search engine.

Is Ambient New Tab free?

Yes. Five themes (Constellation, Marble, Synthwave, Soap Bubble Sky and Paper Drop), the clock, date and search are free forever. Pro unlocks every theme, music sync, and every new theme as it is released. Pro is $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year (cancel anytime), or $59 once for Pro Forever, which never renews.

Does Ambient New Tab track me or collect data?

No tracking of your browsing, ever. There are no accounts and no ads, and your browsing history and search terms never pass through us; the search box hands your query to the browser, which uses the search engine you already chose. The only network request any theme makes is the Bitcoin Rocket theme fetching public prices from Coinbase, and only after you allow it.

How does music sync work?

Play music in any tab (YouTube, Spotify web, SoundCloud, anything), then click the Ambient icon on that tab. The extension listens to that tab's audio, measures bass, mids, treble and the beat on your own computer, and every scene reacts. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere, and the audio keeps playing normally.

Which browsers does Ambient New Tab work in?

Google Chrome on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. It is made and tested for Chrome. Other Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave can usually install it from the Chrome Web Store, but they are not officially supported. It does not run on phones, and there is no Firefox or Safari version yet.

Ambient New Tab is a free Chrome extension that replaces your blank New Tab page with living, animated scenes. Every theme is generated live on your graphics card using WebGL, so it never loops or repeats—instead, it continuously changes based on interactions and input. The scenes react to your mouse movements and, with Pro, can move and respond to music playing in another browser tab. The extension includes a clock, date display, and search box using your default search engine.

Five themes are free forever: Constellation (stars that respond to your cursor), Marble (liquid paint), Synthwave (neon grid), Soap Bubble Sky (bubbles with real physics), and Paper Drop (interactive beads). Pro unlocks all 55+ themes including artistic scenes like Monet's Garden, physics simulations like Ink Drop and Magnetic Dipoles, space scenes like Black Hole and Solar Corona, and interactive themes. Many scenes include their own ambient sound.

The extension is designed to be lightweight: it only renders when the New Tab is visible, pauses when hidden, reduces to 30 fps on battery power, and stops running entirely when you navigate away. It never tracks your browsing, requires no accounts, and contains no ads. Music sync works by listening to audio in another tab on your computer—nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.
